Metro police say shooting during holdup was justifiable

A 22-year-old uniformed security guard who was buying gasoline at a Murfreesboro Pike station on Sunday shot and killed a robbery suspect carrying an air gun.

Metro detectives are ruling the death of Jamie L. Sullivan, 37, a justifiable homicide.

Wearing a mask and carrying what appeared to be a pistol, Sullivan entered the Mapco market at 2101 Murfreesboro Pike at 1:45 a.m.

Eric Gordon, 22, was also in the market. Sullivan pointed his pistol at Gordon's head and threatened to kill him. Sullivan told Gordon to surrender his holstered gun and a struggle ensued. Gordon drew his 9-millimeter weapon and shot Sullivan once in the face. Sullivan died at the scene.

Shortly after, detectives discovered that Sullivan's gun was a BB pistol that looked like a real gun.

Metro police had charged Sullivan with 146 offenses since June 1989. His last arrest was for trespassing Nov. 20.

They didn't set out to. They were just two Marines guarding their post. They were just like two other Marine sentries in Beirut in October of 1983. Except these two, due to their circumstances, were able to prevent what had happened in Beirut. They saved dozens of lives in Ramadi, Iraq this past April.

They didn't have time to think, they just did what Marines do.

Early next year, they'll enter Marine Corps History by being awarded the second highest award for valor, that this country has to bestow (right after the Medal of Honor).

Jonathan Yale was 20 and Jordan Haerter was three months shy of 20. He graduated from High School two years ago.

The sun had barely risen when the two sentries spotted a 20-foot-long truck headed toward the gate, weaving with increasing speed through the concrete barriers. Two Iraqi police officers assigned to the gate ran for their lives. So did several Iraqi police on the adjacent street.

Yale and Haerter tried to wave off the truck, but it kept coming. They opened fire, Yale with a machine gun, Haerter with an M-16. Their bullets peppered the radiator and windshield. The truck slowed but kept rolling.

A few dozen feet from the gate, the truck exploded. Investigators found that it was loaded with 2,000 pounds of explosives and that its driver, his hand on a "dead-man switch," was determined to commit suicide and slaughter Marines and Iraqi police.

The thunderous explosion rocked much of Ramadi, interrupting the morning call to prayers from the many mosques. A nearby mosque and a home were flattened. The blast ripped a crater 5 feet deep and 20 feet across into the street.

Shards of concrete scattered everywhere, and choking dust filled the air.

Haerter was dead; Yale was dying.

Three Marines about 300 feet away were injured. So were eight Iraqi police and two dozen civilians.

But several dozen other nearby Marines and Iraqi police, while shaken, were unhurt. A Black Hawk helicopter was summoned in a futile attempt to get Yale to a field hospital in time. A sheet was placed over Haerter.

When it was considered safe to take Haerter's body to a second helicopter, his section leader insisted he be covered by an American flag. "We did not want him carried out with just a sheet," said Staff Sgt. Kenneth Grooms.

Maj. Gen. John Kelly, the top Marine in Iraq, wanted to know how the attack happened. Like many veteran Marines, he is haunted by the memory of the 1983 bombing of the barracks in Beirut, when a blast from an explosives-laden truck killed 241 U.S. service personnel, including 220 Marines.

Not given to dark thoughts or insecurities, Kelly, who commanded Marines in the fight for Baghdad and Tikrit in 2003 and Fallouja in 2004, admits that the specter of another Beirut gives him nightmares as he commands the 22,000 Marines in Iraq.

He went to Ramadi to interview Iraqi witnesses -- a task generals usually delegate to subordinates.

Some Iraqis told him they were incredulous that the two Marines had not fled.

When Marine technicians restored a damaged security camera, the images were undeniable.

While Iraqi police fled, Haerter and Yale had never flinched and never stopped firing as the Mercedes truck -- the same model used in the Beirut bombing -- sped directly toward them.

Without their steadfastness, the truck would probably have penetrated the compound before it exploded, and 50 or more Marines and Iraqis would have been killed. The incident happened in just six seconds.

"No time to talk it over; no time to call the lieutenant; no time to think about their own lives or even the American and Iraqi lives they were protecting," Kelly said. "More than enough time, however, to do their duty. They never hesitated or tried to escape."

Kelly nominated the two for the Navy Cross, the second-highest award for combat bravery for Marines and sailors. Even by the standards expected of Marine "grunts," their bravery was exceptional, Kelly said.

The Haerter and Yale families will receive the medals early next year.

Ocoee man, 91, shoots at, repels home invaders who threatened his wife

Charles Johnson is a man of his word.

On Oct. 4, 1936, then 19, Johnson promised to love and protect his bride, Berlie Mae.

On Tuesday, he did.

Now 91, he scared off two home invaders with his 38-caliber revolver when the men threatened his wife of 72 years at their home east of Ocoee.

"I was going to kill him either way," the retired jack-of-all-trades said Wednesday. "She's all I've got to live for . . . Why would I want to live?"

Terror erupted in the Johnsons' heavily barred house on Lake Stanley Road shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday as the couple watched TV news. She was sitting in her wheelchair. He was sitting nearby on the sofa.

That's when a stranger stepped through the back door.

"What are you doing? What are you doing?" Berlie Mae Johnson, 90, remembered asking as the man stepped on her shiny-clean tile floor. "By then, he had the gun to my head. I don't know what all I said."

The man ordered the couple: "Be quiet. Don't say a word. Don't move."

Overcome by shock and fear, Berlie Mae Johnson said she couldn't move as a second man wearing a stocking over his face started to come through a sliding-glass door from the backyard.

"It's terrible. You don't know what [they're] going to do. You expect at any moment . . ." she said, her voice breaking. "I can't hold up. My nerves are shot. He'd probably have killed me."

But the love of her life was ready.

Her husband, who goes by Johnny, had his stainless-steel Police Special revolver tucked under a cushion on the sofa. He has been protective, she said, ever since they met at a Church of God service in Cocoa during the Great Depression.

"You don't think, man. You do what you have to do," Johnson said of how he grabbed his revolver as the second intruder entered. "He saw the gun and, boy, he was gone."

Shifting his aim, Johnson fired at the man still holding a gun to his wife's head.

"I shot as plain in his middle as I could have," said Johnson, describing how the man jumped and ran out the door. "I think I missed."

Orange County deputy sheriffs began arriving within three minutes of Johnson's 911 call. The response was delayed slightly because the home invaders tore out the Johnsons' telephone, so Johnson had to walk next door to call for help.

A K-9 tracked the home invaders' scent until it disappeared through a neighborhood on the south shore of Lake Stanley. Local hospital emergency rooms were notified to be on the lookout for a man suffering from an unexplained bullet wound.

Johnson bought his revolver for protection decades ago. A former citrus grove manager and plumber, Johnson said, "I'm still active. I still garden. We want to get a message out to other people. Be prepared. Keep your doors locked. And be alert."

His wife added, "And have a gun ready."

The Johnsons weren't worried that the home invaders might return.

"If he comes back he'll be sorry," Johnson said. "I'm ready for him."

A heartwarming Holocaust memoir that is to become a big-budget film has been exposed as a hoax by a Jewish survivor in Britain only weeks before it was due to be published.

Herman Rosenblat's Angel at the Fence: The True Story of a Love that Survived, tells how he met his future wife as a girl when she threw apples to him over the barbed wire fence of the concentration camp where he was held.

Oprah Winfrey, who twice invited Mr Rosenblat on to her talk show, hailed the book as “the single greatest love story ... we've ever told on air”. The still-unpublished memoir became the basis for a children's book and $25 million (£17 million) feature film, The Flower of the Fence, which is due to start shooting in March.

The February 3 publication date was abruptly cancelled at the weekend, however, when Berkley Books, an imprint of Penguin Group (USA), said it had received “new information” from the author's agent.

This was actually a really neat story, when I first heard it a couple years ago.

That is, until it turned out to be a total lie.

Autoworkers Union Keeps $6 Million Golf Course for Members at $33 Million Lakeside Retreat

The United Auto Workers may be out of the hole now that President Bush has approved a $17 billion bailout of the U.S. auto industry, but the union isn't out of the bunker just yet.

Even as the industry struggles with massive losses, the UAW brass continue to own and operate a $33 million lakeside retreat in Michigan, complete with a $6.4 million designer golf course. And it's costing them millions each year.

The UAW, known more for its strikes than its slices, hosts seminars and junkets at the Walter and May Reuther Family Education Center in Onaway, Mich., which is nestled on "1,000 heavily forested acres" on Michigan's Black Lake, according to its Web site.

But the Black Lake club and retreat, which are among the union's biggest fixed assets, have lost $23 million in the past five years alone, a heavy albatross around the union's neck as it tries to manage a multibillion-dollar pension plan crisis.

Critics call it a resort for union leaders that wastes money from union dues.

"It's their members' money that they're spending on this thing," said Justin Wilson, managing director of the Center for Union Facts, a union watchdog group. "The union has bigger issues at hand than managing a golf course."

Managing the course may become a burden for the union. The UAW covers costs for the Reuther Center from the interest it earns on its strike fund, according to tax documents, but massive losses in the past five years have forced the union to make heavy loans to keep the center afloat. Critics call it a poor investment for a group with over $1.25 billion in assets.

"Unions certainly have had real estate investments in the past, but investments are supposed to make money, not bleed money," said Wilson.

The UAW did not return calls from FOXNews.com, and a spokesman could not be reached for comment.

The Reuther Center is open 11 months of the year to offer courses on leadership, political action, civil rights and other topics; it hosts nearly 10,000 visitors annually. The UAW says it sends workers there to "learn, experience unionism (and) commit to labor's cause," according to their Web site.

The center was purchased in 1967 and underwent massive renovations in the '90s under the careful watch of former UAW president Steve Yokich. "Today's Black Lake might not exist if not for Steve Yokich," said union member Bob Reidt, whom Yokich appointed as Black Lake's director. "Yokich is responsible for rebuilding Black Lake."

The UAW erected a monument to its longtime president Walter Reuther — the center's namesake — which bears an inscription of his words: "There is no greater calling than to serve your brother. There is no greater satisfaction than to have done it well."

But Reuther, who died in a plane crash en route to the center in 1970, never knew the satisfaction of Black Lake's "well-groomed fairways," a course that Michigan Golf Magazine called a "stunning visual marvel."

Union members can play golf at discounted rates on one of the country's top 100 courses, designed in 2000 by famed course architect Rees Jones at a cost of $6 million.

The center has a storied history. Reuther had his ashes scattered at the site, and Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz honeymooned there in 1940, well before it was bought by the UAW.

"It's funny that they call it an education center — it's a resort," said Wilson. "If I was a union member, I would prefer that they rented out a room at the Ramada Inn."

Nine dead in California Santa shooting

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The death toll rose to nine on Friday from a Southern California Christmas Eve rampage by a man dressed as Santa Claus who sprayed gunfire at a party at his former in-laws before setting the house on fire, police said.

Bruce Jeffrey Pardo, 45, opened fire on some two dozen guests before igniting the home in Covina, 23 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles.

Pardo shot an 8-year-old girl in the face when she opened the door to him and then shot at guests indiscriminately as they tried to flee.

He later committed suicide and his body was found at his brother's house.

"He died of self-inflicted wounds. We believe it was a marital dispute," Lt. Pat Buchanan of the Covina Police Department told reporters.

Pardo's 43-year-old ex-wife, Sylvia, and her parents were believed to be among the victims.

The Los Angeles County Coroner's office said the badly burned bodies from the house would have to be identified through dental records.

Police said they do not know how many of the victims died of gunshot wounds or from the fire.

HOMEMADE INCENDIARY DEVICE

Authorities had cordoned off the charred house on Friday and had set up a large tent and trailers to process evidence as they searched the rubble. Tow trucks removed burned out vehicles belonging to party-goers who were injured or killed in the attack.

The suspect, carrying two handguns and a homemade incendiary device, began shooting as soon as he entered the house, Buchanan said.

The house, owned by the parents of Pardo's ex-wife, was engulfed in flames when police arrived.

Two people were wounded by gunfire, the 8-year-old girl who opened the door and a 16-year-old girl who was shot in the back as guests fled the house. Some jumped from second-floor windows, police said. The girls' injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Witnesses told police that Pardo stripped off his Santa costume after the shooting and fled in street clothes.

Pardo had no criminal record and was a regular usher at his Catholic church. He and his wife recently settled a contentious divorce after a year of marriage, police said.

Police discovered $10,000 and an airplane ticket on Pardo's body along with his booby-trapped rental car about a block from his brother's home. A pipe bomb and about 300 rounds of handgun ammunition exploded and destroyed the vehicle as police tried to defuse the device.

Bomb-making equipment was also found at Pardo's home in the quiet suburb of Montrose, 13 miles north of downtown Los Angeles.

Be careful what you read...

This guy was reading an anti-KKK book called "Notre Dame vs. The Klan" at Indiana University (where he was also an employee). A black-female, who was functionally illiterate, saw him reading it and then complained that she was "racially harassed" by his reading of it (because she didn't like what the cover looked like).

He was branded a "racist" by the university "Affirmative Action Office" and ordered not to read the book.

He was later exonerated for any "racist" acts by the university and the university apologized after considerable hue and cry.

Are you the next person to be accused of being a "racist" for reading a book?

David Spade helps Phoenix police buy rifles

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Phoenix Police Department has gotten some high-powered goodies courtesy of actor David Spade.

The one-time Phoenix resident donated $100,000 so that the department can buy approximately 50 AR-15 rifles.

Spade said he wanted to make the donation after seeing a TV news report about Phoenix officers having to buy their own rifles. Spade grew up in the Phoenix area and graduated from Arizona State University.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Andy Hill says the rifles will be given to patrol officers and that the agency was grateful for the gifts.

"These guys need to be able to do their jobs and I am just happy I could help," Spade said in a statement released by his publicist.

Loving the double-standard!

All she wants is some Christmas cards.

Lights flashing, they drove north through the darkness Thursday, a caravan of about 70 fire trucks, ambulances and police cars headed toward a small, red-headed girl in a party dress.

Hannah Garman, 4, quietly watched them pulling into a parking lot. She was lying on a litter just outside an ambulance, her pink shoes poking out of a white sheet.

Hannah, who lives in Lititz with her dad, brother and sister, recently was diagnosed with a fatal form of brain cancer. Her mom, Christine, died from cancer two years ago.

Hannah's wish for Christmas this year was to get lots of cards.

That wish went out in an e-mail late last week. Her family believes it was sent by someone who knows them but they are not sure.

It would be an understatement to say that Hannah's wish has been granted.

Within days, cards began trickling into the Lititz home of her grandparents, who are helping to care for her. The trickle became a stream, then a torrent, then a flood of hundreds of cards from all over the world, as the e-mail spread over the Internet.

School children made cards. Churches sent them. Families and kids and everybody and his brother, from Canada to Mexico to Singapore, has gotten in on the action.

When county firefighters heard about Hannah, they thought it would be nice if they could send her some cheer, too.

Glenn Usdin, deputy chief of the Lancaster Township Fire Company, suggested on a fire message board that it would be nice for fire companies to collect some cards, get a few trucks together and deliver them to Hannah.

"We all call each other brothers and sisters," Usdin said of the firefighting community Thursday. "We heard about Hannah and we said she's an honorary sister to us."

Usdin knew that when the call goes out to firefighters, they answer.

As Todd Steinmetz, a lieutenant from the White Horse Fire Company, said, "It's just what we do."

A flood of fire companies decided to participate, gathering Thursday in Warwick Township at Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center, which helped organize the event.

They traveled together to the Lititz Area Mennonite School, where Hannah was brought by ambulance to greet the procession.

It took 19 minutes just for the caravan to pull into the parking lot. Here was an antique fire truck decorated with Christmas lights. There was a huge, state-of-the-art truck, with Santa Claus sitting in the passenger seat.

Someone dressed up in a Dalmatian suit waved from atop another truck.

Amish firefighters came. So did city firefighters. There were police officers from New Holland and Quarryville. Emergency medical workers from all over the place joined in.

Hannah watched, her dad, Darin, and other family members by her side. Siblings Brittany, 12, and Jordan, 9, were there, too, as well as members of her large extended family.

A group of well wishers, most who did not know Hannah, also stood nearby in support, some of them wiping the tears from their eyes.

"It's really overwhelming. It's amazing how much love and Christmas spirit there is," Hannah's father said afterward, as Hannah opened cards from the piles stacked in bags and baskets alongside her on the school auditorium's stage.

"This just makes us realize there are a lot of people out there who care and will reach out to people they don't know," said Hannah's great-aunt, Jane Pfautz, of Ephrata.

The plan is for Hannah to start chemotherapy next week, and radiation the week after that. Her family is hoping for a miracle, Pfautz said.

A little one already happened Thursday.

"Maybe Hannah will be the miracle for Lancaster County," said Sharon Garloff, of Ephrata, who came to Lititz to see the procession. "Look at this! It's amazing what she has done for Lancaster County."

* A 4 percent entertainment tax on tickets to movies, concerts and sporting events. That would add nearly 50 cents to a $12 movie ticket or $1.80 to the cheapest $44.50 seat at a Knicks game.

* The tax on beer increases 24 cents per gallon, or more than double the current rate, which means about 30 cents a case.

* An 18 percent tax on nondiet soft drinks, which aims to reduce child obesity. A $1.50 can of Pepsi would then cost at least 25 cents more.

* A 4 percent tax on cable TV and satellite services, raising a $100 bill by $4.

* Hiking the cost of "personal" services - including haircuts, manicures, pedicures, massages and gym memberships - by 4 percent.

* A 4 percent sales tax on clothing and shoes under $500, except for two weeks out of the year.

* Elimination of the law that caps the state sales tax on gasoline at 8 cents per gallon.

* Boosting the average vehicle registration fee for drivers by $11, from $44 to $55. Fees for new or renewed licenses also would increase 25 percent, or increase from $50 to about $62 to renew a license over eight years. . . .

The Kalifornia Supreme Court just ruled that "Good-Samaritans" have no legal protection for injuries caused during an emergency rescue of another person.

The legal protections during medical aid still remain though.

For example: If I see you in a burning car and try to get you out, but you get injured during that extrication, you can sue me.

If I pull you out of a burning car and then you get injured due to my medical treatment of you, I'm covered by law.

Makes sense. In Kalifornia.

But in a sharp dissent, three of the seven justices said that by making a distinction between medical care and emergency response, the court was placing "an arbitrary and unreasonable limitation" on protections for those trying to help.

In 1980, the Legislature enacted the Health and Safety Code, which provides that "no person who in good faith, and not for compensation, renders emergency care at the scene of an emergency shall be liable for any civil damages resulting from any act or omission."

Although that passage does not use the word "medical" in describing the protected emergency care, it was included in the section of the code that deals with emergency medical services. By placing it there, lawmakers intended to shield "only those persons who in good faith render emergency medical care at the scene of a medical emergency," Justice Carlos R. Moreno wrote for the majority.

The high court cited no previous cases involving good Samaritan actions deemed unprotected by the state code, suggesting the challenge of Torti's rescue effort was the first to narrow the scope of the law.

The three dissenting justices argued, however, that the aim of the legislation was clearly "to encourage persons not to pass by those in need of emergency help, but to show compassion and render the necessary aid."

Justice Marvin R. Baxter said the ruling was "illogical" because it recognizes legal immunity for nonprofessionals administering medical care while denying it for potentially life-saving actions like saving a person from drowning or carrying an injured hiker to safety.

"One who dives into swirling waters to retrieve a drowning swimmer can be sued for incidental injury he or she causes while bringing the victim to shore, but is immune for harm he or she produces while thereafter trying to revive the victim," Baxter wrote for the dissenters. "Here, the result is that defendant Torti has no immunity for her bravery in pulling her injured friend from a crashed vehicle, even if she reasonably believed it might be about to explode."

I still think I'd try to help (despite the risk of a lawsuit) because it's the right thing to do. Am I just stupid?

Congress votes itself a pay-raise.

You know, because they're doing such a fantastic job and all...

A crumbling economy, more than 2 million constituents who have lost their jobs this year, and congressional demands of CEOs to work for free did not convince lawmakers to freeze their own pay.

Instead, they will get a $4,700 pay increase, amounting to an additional $2.5 million that taxpayers will spend on congressional salaries, and watchdog groups are not happy about it.

“As lawmakers make a big show of forcing auto executives to accept just $1 a year in salary, they are quietly raiding the vault for their own personal gain,” said Daniel O’Connell, chairman of The Senior Citizens League (TSCL), a non-partisan group. “This money would be much better spent helping the millions of seniors who are living below the poverty line and struggling to keep their heat on this winter.”

However, at 2.8 percent, the automatic raise that lawmakers receive is only half as large as the 2009 cost of living adjustment of Social Security recipients.

One of the strangest things about the current California meltdown is how no one in state government here ever pauses to ask simple questions like: Why do we have the largest annual deficit with one of the highest sales tax and income tax rates in the country?

Anyone who charted the annual state budget increases over the last 10 years and adjusted for population and inflation rises would conclude that the state has decided to take over all sorts of previously private responsibilities and to ensure state employees and various dependents a level of compensation that is not sustainable.

It is not as if California decided about 10 years ago to invest to ensure we had state of the art freeways, university campuses, ports, airports, dams, canals, and power infrastructure. Instead, it was too often redistribution rather than investment. It is not like we can get out of the mess by simply stopping all construction when a vast public work force with pension and salary claims, along with entitlements and welfare, take the lion's share of the budget.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands whom we used to count on to pay our nearly 10% state income rates continue to flee the state. All the past sleight-of-hand borrowing, reliance on inflated real estate, lotteries, bonds, etc. have already been tried. Now we hit the wall of reality, whose iron-clad law — when you have no money, you really have no money — cannot be so easily demagogued away.

Under the faint glow of portable heaters, a warmly bundled crowd of admirers Monday night waited to catch sight of some of the state's more illustrious musicians, actors and leaders who were inducted into the California Museum's California Hall of Fame.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and first lady Maria Shriver awarded the 12 newest inductees the Spirit of California medal at the California Museum of History, Women & the Arts in downtown Sacramento.

Among the recipients were actor Jack Nicholson and actress Jane Fonda, music impresario Quincy Jones, jazz musician Dave Brubeck, fitness guru Jack LaLanne and chef Alice Waters.

"It's a huge honor for me. I have to pinch myself to make sure it's real," said Fonda, while walking on the red carpet before the event.

I wonder if they included this picture?

Mall of America Moves to Accommodate Minnesota Muslims

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – On the day Muslims around the world began to celebrate Eid al-Adha, Fatuma Mohamed was at the Mall of America (MOA), far away from where she would normally say her prayers.

But she and other Muslims needed to take time from the activities of the mall and find a quiet area to pray as Muslims do during the festival that commemorates Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his only son for God.

“I said my prayer right at that corner,” Mohamed said, pointing to the spot.

Another Muslim, Amran Ali, did the same.

“I had to say my prayer at a corner,” Ali said. “I was stared at, but no one bothered me.”

Every year, as Muslims in America are compelled to engage in business, work and shopping during the holidays, many find themselves away from mosques and other places where they can hold prayers without interruption. They are forced to seek privacy in corners and alleyways, places that often subject them to unwanted attention. Some Muslims also worry that their repetitive calls of “Allah akbar!” (God is great!) during prayers could be misconstrued as calls for Jihad. (Ed. - Good thing the MOA is a "Gun-Free Zone"!)

“Of course, out curiosity people will stare at you but don’t say anything,” said Shuuriye Ali. “I wish they would ask. I would love to educate them about my peaceful religion.” (Ed. - No thanks. I learned all I needed to know about Islam on 9/11/01.)

This year Muslim leaders from the Twin Cities area were able to persuade MOA, the largest enclosed mall in the United States, to set aside a room for prayers.

“I learned quite a bit from my last meeting with the community,” said Douglas Reynolds, MOA’s security director.

But Mohamed and other Muslims did not know there was a prayer room, even though MOA and Muslim volunteers had intended to have eight posters in three languages, (English, Somali and Arabic) to be displayed at all entrances to the mall.

“I didn’t notice any signs,” Mohamed said.

Reynolds said many might have missed the signs because MOA and the Muslim leaders did not advise the community about the prayer room before this week’s observance of Eid al-Adha. The signs also went up too late in the day, Reynolds said.

“It would have been nice to get the message out to the community earlier,” Reynolds said. “The signs were also not available until 4:30 p.m.”

He promised that MOA would “do a better job next time.”

Regardless of the glitch, many Muslims appeared excited that the MOA reserved prayer space for them and promised to continue doing so in the future.

“It is about time,” Jamad Barrow said. “I’m happy to hear that the mall is trying to accommodate and appeal to the Muslim community.”

Sheikh Neelain Muhammad, an imam at the St.Paul-based Da’wa Islamic Center, and five other volunteers from the center were among the many volunteers who were at the mall to make sure that day went on without incidents, especially from teenagers.

Reynolds, the MOA security director, said that community volunteers were very helpful.

“At one point, Sheikh Neelain Muhammad and his team were spotted talking to the youth and telling them to behave … and so, they did.”

The presence of culturally competent volunteers at the mall avoided the law enforcement solution that often leads to the arrest of Muslim youths.

“No one youth that was acting out that didn’t change after we talked with him or her,” Sheikh Muhammad said.

Mahmood Kanyare, one of the community volunteers, said the volunteers reminded the youth about good manners in Islam.

“They were all responsive to our messages and behaved well as a result,” Kanyare said.

The day ended with a positive note for both MOA and the Muslim community. No one was arrested and only few were asked to leave.

Reynolds, the director of security, said he hoped to continue building MOA’s relationship with the Muslim community.

Officer Joseph Sanders was struck and killed by a vehicle while directing traffic at the scene of a previous accident on Pomona Freeway in Hacienda Heights.

The vehicle that struck him had collided with another car on the rain-slicked highway at approximately 4:20 am. Officer Sanders was flown to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Officer Sanders had served with the agency for 14 months. He is survived by his expectant wife and three children.

McCain Campaign Sells Info-Loaded Blackberry to FOX 5 Reporter

ARLINGTON, Va. - Private information at bargain prices. It was a high-tech flub at the McCain-Palin campaign headquarters in Arlington when Fox 5’s Investigative Reporter Tisha Thompson bought a Blackberry device containing confidential campaign information.

It started with a snippet we read on page A23 in Thursday’s Washington Post. The McCain-Palin campaign was going to sell its used office inventory at low prices.

But when we got there, it didn’t look like we were going to get much. It was lunchtime and most of the good stuff was gone, picked over by early birds looking for deals on file cabinets, white boards, sofas-- anything headquarters could sell to get back some of their campaign dough.

We saw laptops ranging between $400 and $600 with logins like “WARROOM08.” We couldn’t log on without a password, but staffers assured us the hard drive would be zapped before it was sold, and the computer would probably work.

The hottest item? Blackberry phones at $20 a piece. There were only 10 left. All of the batteries had died. There were no chargers for sale. But people were snatching them up. So, we bought a couple.

And ended up with a lot more than we bargained for.

When we charged them up in the newsroom, we found one of the $20 Blackberry phones contained more than 50 phone numbers for people connected with the McCain-Palin campaign, as well as hundreds of emails from early September until a few days after election night.

We traced the Blackberry back to a staffer who worked for “Citizens for McCain,” a group of democrats who threw their support behind the Republican nominee. The emails contain an insider’s look at how grassroots operations work, full of scheduling questions and rallying cries for support.

But most of the numbers were private cell phones for campaign leaders, politicians, lobbyists and journalists.

We called some of the numbers.

“Somebody made a mistake,” one owner told us. “People’s numbers and addresses were supposed to be erased.”

“They should have wiped that stuff out,” another said. But he added, “Given the way the campaign was run, this is not a surprise.”

We called the McCain-Palin campaign, who says, “it was an unfortunate staff error and procedures are being put in place to ensure all information is secure.”

But we wonder-- Did we get the only Blackberry with personal campaign information in it? Or did you get one too?

Because innocent people ALWAYS keep their mouths shut...

Obama chief of staff Rahm Emanuel ducks reporters' questions

President-elect Barack Obama’s chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, refused to take questions from reporters this morning about whether he was the Obama “advisor” named in the criminal complaint against Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

The complaint states Blagojevich wanted a promise of a high-level appointment or some other reward for Blagojevich in exchange for Blagojevich naming Obama’s friend Valerie Jarrett to replace him in the U.S. Senate.

Emanuel was uncharacteristically absent from Obama’s news conference this morning. He was spotted two hours later in the lobby of Chicago’s City Hall. He was there to listen to his two children performing in a concert with their school, Anshe Emet.

A Sun-Times reporter pressed him to comment about whether he was the emissary named in the criminal complaint.

“You’re wasting your time,” Emanuel said. “I’m not going to say a word to you. I’m going to do this with my children. Dont do that. I’m a father. I have two kids. I’m not going to do it.”

Asked, “Can’t you do both?” Emanuel replied, “I’m not as capable as you. I’m going to be a father. I’m allowed to be a father,” and he pushed the reporter’s digital recorder away.

Blagojevch was caught on tape saying that he wanted the Obama advisor in question to know what Blagojevich wanted in exchange for the Jarrett appointment.

Blagojevich said, “He asks me for the fifth CD thing, I want it to be in his head.” Emanuel represents the 5th Congressional District in Illinois.

No one in the Obama campaign or administration has been charged with any wrongdoing. Obama said this morning that none of his staff has had a hand in any dealmaking on his Senate replacement.

A Korean immigrant who lost his wife, two children and mother-in-law when a Marine Corps jet slammed into the family’s house said Tuesday he did not blame the pilot, who ejected and survived.

“Please pray for him not to suffer from this accident,” a distraught Dong Yun Yoon told reporters gathered near the site of Monday’s crash of an F/A-18D jet in San Diego’s University City community.

“He is one of our treasures for the country,” Yoon said in accented English punctuated by long pauses while he tried to maintain his composure.

“I don’t blame him. I don’t have any hard feelings. I know he did everything he could,” said Yoon, flanked by members of San Diego’s Korean community, relatives and members from the family’s church.

Authorities said four people died when the jet crashed into the Yoon family’s house while the pilot was trying to reach nearby Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. Another, unoccupied house also was destroyed.

Yoon named the victims as his infant daughter Rachel, who was born less than two months ago; his 15-month-old daughter Grace; his wife, Young Mi Yoon, 36; and her 60-year-old mother, Suk Im Kim, who he said had come to the United States from Korea recently to help take care of the children.

Fighting back tears, he said of his daughters: “I cannot believe that they are not here right now.” “I know there are many people who have experienced more terrible things,” Yoon said. “But, please, tell me how to do it. I don’t know what to do.”

… Yoon’s wife came to the United States about four years ago, Shin said.

Yoon spoke softly when he talked about his wife.

“It was God’s blessing that I met her about four years ago. She was a lovely wife and mother,” he said.

His voice fading, he added: “She loves me and babies. I just miss her so much.”

As horrible as it was for the people involved, it had the potential of being a very much worse accident.

Pretty sad...

This happened not far from where I live.

What happened was a schizophrenic man got into a standoff/shoot-out with Law Enforcement, after killing his father at their home. In the process, Three El Dorado Co. Sheriff's deputies were wounded and the suspect was killed.

Two of the three deputies subsequently sued the mother of the suspect, for a lot of money, on the premise that she and her husband knew he was dangerous and did nothing to stop him or alert Law Enforcement. The mother had lost both her husband and son and the deputies wanted to take her house, too. Both deputies were rightfully scorned by their Sheriff, fellow deputies and the community for that asinine lawsuit.

They later dropped the lawsuit.

This is the deputy that refused to sue. Probably, because she was a good person.

Police: Ex-deputy involved in El Dorado shootout kills herself

A former El Dorado County Sheriff's deputy who was injured in last year's shootout in Shingle Springs has committed suicide, authorities said.

Placerville police were called at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday to the apartment of 28-year-old Melissa Meekma, said Capt. Mike Scott, a spokesman with the Placerville Police Department.

Meekma died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, Scott said.

On June 5, 2007, Eddie Mies killed his 72-year-old father, Arthur, and engaged deputies in a hour-long shootout at the Mies' Shingle Springs property. Eddie Mies, 34, was shot and killed by a deputy after a search of the area.

Meekma was one of the three deputies wounded in the shootout. One of the deputy's canine partner was also injured.

Meekma took a medical retirement from the Sheriff's Department on June 30 after struggling with post-traumatic stress.

Trooper honored for subduing man with a gun

OKLAHOMA CITY All Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Sheldon Robinson was looking for was a burger and an oil change on his day off.

But Thursday he got a standing ovation from members of the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority for his heroic actions in between.

On Sept. 5, Robinson dropped his wife and two children off at the Burger King restaurant at 41st Street and Memorial Drive and was pulling into an auto dealership across the street for an oil change when his cell phone rang.

"My spouse told me there was a man inside with a gun, saying he was going to kill everybody," said Robinson, an 11-year veteran of the highway patrol who is assigned to the Creek and Muskogee turnpikes.

Robinson turned around in time to see people fleeing the building, including his wife, who grabbed the couple's two children and hid in a nearby trash container area, closing the doors behind her.

It was only an instant, but Robinson said it seemed like hours before he got his truck turned around and pointed for the Burger King.

"I was relieved to see them in the Dumpster area, but I knew I had to go in there and see what was going on," he said.

Robinson, wearing his trooper badge around his neck and carrying his weapon, parked his truck and peered in the window of the Burger King.

Inside was a man dressed in black. A Glock .40-caliber handgun and a full box of ammunition sat on the tabletop next to him.

Three other people were looking for a way out when Robinson passed
them as he entered the restaurant.

When the man briefly removed his hand from his gun, Robinson, who had approached from the man's blind side, grabbed his arm.

Now alone in the restaurant, the two men wrestled on the floor before Robinson got one of his handcuffs around the man's arm.

"The second one didn't lock in place, so we went down again," Robinson said. "He was a pretty stout guy."

Robinson had the man fully cuffed by the time Tulsa police officers arrived.

"It was one of those deals of being in the right place at the right time," Robinson said. "I believe he would have loaded up that gun and gone to town because he was praying for Allah to help him carry out his mission."

Jerome Norvell Denson, 24, of Tulsa was arrested on charges of attempting to perform an act of violence and possession of a firearm while in the commission of a felony. He remains in jail awaiting a preliminary hearing.

For his actions, Robinson, 40, was named Trooper of the Month.

"He was off-duty and in my opinion he prevented a very serious loss of life or injury from happening," said Maj. Dennis Gann, who is in charge of law enforcement and emergency services on the turnpike system. "He had to make a very quick decision and put his own personal safety aside to subdue the assailant. Obviously, that was a good thing."

So Proud

I have to say: It's hard to be sad when you're so proud. Rob arrived in Nebraska around 1:30 yesterday afternoon. Rob was escorted by his Troop XO who happened to be on deployment break (R&R) when Rob passed away. I know that Rob would want Kaine to escort him and am very honored that he was able to do this. When they took the casket off the plane, it was draped in an American Flag and received by the Honor Guard. Once he was placed in the vehicle, we were escorted by a police car and several members of the Patriot Guards on their motorcycles. These guys are so amazing. It is 35 degrees and the wind is blowing like crazy and they still rode on their bikes 75 miles with American Flags waving behind them. As we left the airport, there was a line all the way out of soldiers saluting us. Once we got off the interstate and went through the towns to reach my hometown (Osceola), it was amazing. There were people lined up on the streets holding flags and signs. This was done through all the towns we went through. It's times like this that you know the majority of Americans truly love our country and our soldiers. I can't even describe the feeling I had seeing all this. I've never been prouder to be a military wife or my husband an American Soldier.

Today we had his wake. Again, the amount of people who showed up for this was amazing. There were people there I've known all my life and people I had never met before. Rob had touched so many people. The walls were lined with flowers, plants, angels. It is so comforting knowing how many people care about us and will be there for the girls and I in the months and years to come.

Tomorrow is going to be tough. But, Rob died doing what he loved and what he believed in and I am so proud of him. My aunt said it perfectly: There are some people who live to be 80 but never really live. Rob lived to be 31 and lived life to the fullest. And, boy, did he live. Thank you all SO MUCH for the beautiful bouquets, plants, cards, donations, words, food and everything else you've done for us. I am at a loss of words to describe how much this means to me. God bless you all.

When your target leaves his car parked where he can't see it while eating dinner, remove all of the gear from the front seat, including the long gun and put it in the trunk. Roll down the driver's window. Sprinkle shattered window glass from an accident scene around the driver's door. Sit across the parking lot and watch the show.

If a deputy leaves his computer logged on when he is away, send the Sheriff an email that says "I love you, man!".

If someone is writing a report and leaves his computer logged when he leaves to handle a call, insert the sentence "I leaped over the tall building and resuced the fair maiden" into the narrative. When the sergeant chews out the whole shift for it, because it wasn't caught until the defense attorney read it at arraignment in court a few days later, blame the sergeant for not properly reviewing his shift's reports. (The blaming the sergeant part only works if you are one of his best friends.)

Make someone late to roll call by wrapping an entire roll of duct tape around the lock on his locker, then coat it with axle grease. Make someone late by turning his locker around. Make someone late by hoisting his locker up to the ceiling on the rope and pulley that the locker room gym heavy bag hangs from.

Have fun with a fellow court security deputy by borrowing the electric-powered indoor cherry picker from General Services Department (building maintenance) and putting the target's bike on top the air ducts in the prisoner holding facility. He will retaliate by removing all of your truck's tires, stacking them in the truck bed and leaving your vehicle up on blocks in the parking lot.

When working court security and training a brand new deputy on being a bailiff, hand him a card to read to convene court when the judge walks in. This assumes that the newbie doesn't know that the practice in this county has been, for decades, to simply say "All rise". It will be quite a show when the deputy announces "All rise and face the flag. The Superior Court of the State of California, in and for the County of XXXX is now in session, the Honorable Joe Dokes presiding. All those having business before the court, now step forward and be heard." (Make sure the judge is in on it.)

I can't lay claim to direct participation in all of those, but can say that I sure work with a fun bunch of guys.

I had to fill up my tank last night. $1.16 per gallon (with a $.50 discount from Raley's supermarket). Mom got the coupon for spending over $100 in groceries, so we met at the gas station to fill up.

My mom and I both filled our tanks for far less than it cost to fill up just mine, six months ago.

Amsterdam to close many brothels, marijuana cafes

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) - Amsterdam unveiled plans Saturday to close brothels, sex shops and marijuana cafes in its ancient city center as part of a major effort to drive organized crime out of the tourist haven.

The city is targeting businesses that "generate criminality," including gambling parlors, and the so-called "coffee shops" where marijuana is sold openly. Also targeted are peep shows, massage parlors and souvenir shops used by drug dealers for money-laundering.

"I think that the new reality will be more in line with our image as a tolerant and crazy place, rather than a free zone for criminals" said Lodewijk Asscher, a city council member and one of the main proponents of the plan.

The news comes just one day after Amsterdam's mayor said he would search for loopholes in new rules laid down by the national government that would close marijuana cafes near schools citywide. The measures announced Saturday would affect about 36 coffee shops in the center itself - a little less than 20 percent of the city total.

Asscher underlined that the city center will remain true to its freewheeling reputation.

"It'll be a place with 200 windows (for prostitutes) and 30 coffee shops, which you can't find anywhere else in the world - very exciting, but also with cultural attractions," he said. "And you won't have to be embarrassed to say you came."

Disgraced former American football star O.J. Simpson was sentenced Friday to at least 15 years in prison for armed robbery and kidnapping during a 2007 raid on a Las Vegas hotel room.

Yay.

So this is fun...

Earlier this week I got served with a lawsuit for a Federal Civil Rights violation for something that happened almost a year ago.

Long story short, I wrote a guy a parking ticket and he tried to flee the scene and then when he stopped, he assaulted me. I ended up having to use force against him, which caused some fairly minor injuries and apparently very severe "emotional trauma" for him and his family. He also says that I made a false police report and falsely arrested him.

All for a $50 ticket.

Funny how a guy that assaults a police officer, then wants to sue for a bunch of money, when he's the one that broke the law. He wants a pay-day.

Maybe I'll sue him after it gets dismissed.

Regardless, I doubt he'll assault another cop again, anytime soon...

Ala. county sets 'Barack Obama Day' as new holiday

MARION, Ala. (AP) - A small central Alabama county whose mainly black residents gave Barack Obama more than 70 percent of the vote on Election Day has created an annual holiday in honor of the president-elect.

The Perry County Commission voted 4 to 1 to observe the second Monday in November as "The Barack Obama Day." County offices will close and its roughly 40 workers will get a paid holiday.

The sponsoring commissioner, Albert Turner Jr., said the holiday is meant to highlight the Democratic president-elect's victory as a way to give people faith that difficult goals can be achieved.

The majority of the county's 12,000 residents are black.

The county commission's three black members and one of its two white members voted for the resolution.

Commissioner Brett Harrison said Wednesday he voted against the resolution because of the holiday costs to the county, which has a $2.2 million annual payroll and is one of the poorest in the state. He said closing the courthouse would also idle some state employees.

"I'm a Democrat, but just in these financial times, it's not using the county's money wisely," Harrison told The Associated Press by phone Wednesday. "The recognition is certainly well-founded."

Turner said copies of the resolution, adopted at a Nov. 25 meeting, have been mailed to Obama and his transition team.

An Associated Press exit poll found black voters in Alabama almost universally supported Obama while more than eight in 10 whites backed Republican John McCain. McCain carried the state with 60 percent of the vote.

Cuffed woman crashes after speeding off in CHP car

PLEASANTON -- A handcuffed woman led California Highway Patrol officers on a high-speed chase Monday in one of their own patrol cars on northbound Interstate 680 until she crashed in Pleasanton, officers said.

At about 3:30 p.m. a CHP officer tried to pull over an Acura Integra near the Stevens Creek Road off-ramp in Fremont. The Integra didn't yield and a pursuit ensued with speeds topping off around 80 miles per hour, said CHP Officer Steve Creel.

The Integra exited on Calaveras Road and officers caused the car to spin out. The male driver and a female passenger, both in their late teens or early 20s, tried to get away on foot but officers arrested them.

The officers put the woman in a patrol car, and then drove over to assist in the arrest of the man, whom officers had shot with a Taser, Creel said. Left alone, the woman somehow got her handcuffed arms in front of her, moved from the back of the patrol car to the driver's seat and sped away.

Officers pursued her through Sunol and Pleasanton at more than 100 mph, Creel said.

At about 4 p.m. the woman lost control as she tried to exit at the Stoneridge Drive off ramp and the patrol car overturned in the area between the off ramp and the freeway, Creel said. The woman was also shot with a Taser.

The man and the woman were taken to ValleyCare Medical Center in Pleasanton.

The chase and arrests closed the slow lane on northbound I-680 and backed up traffic.

The CHP is investigating how the woman was able to escape custody.
