Calif. mom who fled Mich. prison to be released
By ED WHITE, Associated (with Terrorists) Press Writer
DETROIT – A California woman captured last year after escaping from a Michigan prison in 1976 and living on the lam as a suburban mother will be released from the original sentence that put her behind bars, a state parole board ruled Wednesday.
Susan LeFevre will be freed May 19, but her behavior in prison will be closely monitored until that date because of several misconducts, said Russ Marlan, spokesman for the Michigan Department of Corrections.
"If there is significant misconduct, they'll revisit the case," Marlan said. The misconducts include disobeying orders from guards, getting into a verbal altercation with an inmate and keeping medication under a mattress, he said.
LeFevre's lawyer, Barbara Klimaszewski, said her client had been suffering from depression but added, "We have light at the end of the tunnel and that's a great thing."
LeFevre, 54, escaped from a Michigan prison in 1976 after serving about 14 months of a 10-year drug sentence in Saginaw County. LeFevre has said she never expected to get 10 years in prison when she agreed to plead guilty in 1974.
She made her way to California, got married and raised a family in the San Diego area.
Marlan said the parole board noted that she has committed no crimes since her escape.
"The chairman summed it up: They want prisoners to walk out of prison and to live an existence like she lived, not committing violations of the law and living a productive life," he said.
Saginaw County Prosecutor Mike Thomas said he was disappointed by the ruling because he wanted LeFevre to serve the same length in prison — at least 40 months — as her co-defendant in the drug case. If freed in May, she will have served more than a year short of that length.
"I don't agree with the decision of the parole board, but it's their authority," Thomas said.
LeFevre has said she escaped because she feared for her safety in prison. Since her capture, her lawyers had been fighting to get the 10-year drug sentence thrown out as too excessive for a first-time offender.
The board did not spend much time discussing the fairness of her sentence for a heroin sale, although members believed she has wrongly tried to minimize her role, Marlan said.
"They believed without question that she was a significant player in the drug trade," he said.
LeFevre has not been given extra prison time because of the escape. She pleaded guilty in September and was sentenced to two years of probation for that offense.

Stunning.
Six days into his presidency and he's already given an interview to an al-Qaeda mouthpiece.
Unbelievable.
H/T: Gateway Pundit
Unbelievable.
The interview with the Dubai-based Al-Arabiya Network was a dramatic piece of public diplomacy aimed at capitalizing on the new American president's international popularity, though it balanced America's traditional commitment to Israel, whose security Obama called "paramount.'
"I have Muslim members of my family. I have lived in Muslim countries," Obama said, according to a White House transcript. "My job to the Muslim world is to communicate that the Americans are not your enemy."
...Obama also signaled a move away from President Bush's confrontational, generalizing language. Melhem noted to Obama that "President Bush framed the war on terror conceptually in a way that was very broad, 'war on terror,' and used sometimes certain terminology that the many people -- Islamic fascism. You've always framed it in a different way, specifically against one group called al Qaeda and their collaborators."
"I think that you're making a very important point. And that is that the language we use matters," Obama replied. "[W]hat we need to understand is, is that there are extremist organizations -- whether Muslim or any other faith in the past -- that will use faith as a justification for violence. We cannot paint with a broad brush a faith as a consequence of the violence that is done in that faith's name.
"And so you will I think see our administration be very clear in distinguishing between organizations like al Qaeda -- that espouse violence, espouse terror and act on it -- and people who may disagree with my administration and certain actions, or may have a particular viewpoint in terms of how their countries should develop," he said. "We can have legitimate disagreements but still be respectful. I cannot respect terrorist organizations that would kill innocent civilians and we will hunt them down."

Boy, 14, dupes police, patrols Chicago for 5 hours
By MICHAEL TARM, Associated (with Terrorists) Press Writer – Sun Jan 25, 11:05 pm ET
CHICAGO – A 14-year-old aspiring police officer donned a uniform, walked into a Chicago police station and managed to get an assignment — patrolling in a squad car for five hours before he was detected, police said Sunday.
The boy did not have a gun, never issued any tickets and didn't drive the squad car, Deputy Superintendent Daniel Dugan said.
Assistant Superintendent James Jackson said the ruse was discovered only after the boy's patrol with an actual officer ended Saturday. Officers noticed his uniform lacked a star that is part of the regulation uniform.
Police said they were investigating how the deception went undetected for so long in what they described as a serious security breach. Police said disciplinary steps are possible pending the outcome of the investigation.
Police didn't identify the boy because of his age. He has been charged as a juvenile with impersonating an officer.
Dugan said the boy looks older than 14 and was motivated by a desire to be an officer, not malice or "ill intent."
The boy once took part in a Chicago program for youth interested in policing, so he would have been familiar with some procedures, perhaps helping him blend in, police spokeswoman Monique Bond said.

She has a brain tumor and she doesn't seem to be responding to treatment.
She needs your prayers now.
This is an update from her aunt:
My name is Michelle Reiff, but to Hannah Garman, my little 5 year old niece, it is Aunt Shelly. I am writing this email hoping it gets mass emailed as quick as the benefit emails and all the other emails did….so I am asking all of you to please forward on to all your contacts, friends , family, anyone and everyone. You have all proved how amazing you are at coming together for a good cause and I thank each one of you from the bottom of my heart. I am asking just one more simple thing and the most important.
Today, we received news that the doctors said there is nothing more they can do for Hannah, that she hasn’t responded to chemo or radiation at all. The tumors have actually grown. They told her dad to just enjoy every day we have with her and that this brain cancer is so aggressive that they’re not even sure how long we may have with Hannah.
…I am asking for you to pray for the manifestation of the miracle of healing we have all been praying for to now begin to show itself to us. I believe that the power of prayer is huge, and God said if we ask, we will receive, but the biggest part, is we have to believe it has already been done. So now, we must claim her healing and watch for its manifestation in Hannah’s little body. No matter what signs I see, I will trust that God is still healing her. He has the attention of so many people all around the world right now with little Hannah and I know good things will continue to come from this.
I know the only way God doesn’t answer prayers like this the way we have come to him and asked is if he already knows there is something he doesn’t want Hannah to either go through or has already gone through and chooses for her to come home to him and be with her Mom in Heaven.
But he tells us to stand and pray without ceasing. And he will do the rest. But if you don’t ask, he can’t give. So, please , I’m asking all of you to stand with me as we all ask God to now show us that he is the ultimate healer and ultimately it is his choice but in us asking, he is wanting to give us what we ask for but we also have to believe he has already given to us.

Barack Obama inauguration: this Emperor has no clothes, it will all end in tears
Posted By: Gerald Warner at Jan 20, 2009 at 18:50:54
This will end in tears. The Obama hysteria is not merely embarrassing to witness, it is itself contributory to the scale of the disaster that is coming. What we are experiencing, in the deepening days of a global depression, is the desperate suspension of disbelief by people of intelligence - la trahison des clercs - in a pathetic effort to hypnotise themselves into the delusion that it will be all right on the night. It will not be all right.
We have been here before. In the spring of 1997, to be precise, when a charismatic, young prime minister entered Downing Street, cheered by children bussed in for the occasion waving plastic Union Jacks. A very few of us at that time incurred searing reproaches for denouncing the Great Charlatan (as I have always denominated Tony Blair) and dissenting from the public hysteria. Three times a deluded Britain elected that transparent fraud. Yesterday, when national bankruptcy became a formal reality, we reaped the bitter harvest of the Blair/Brown imposture.
The burnt child, contrary to conventional wisdom, does not fear the fire. After the Blair experience there is no excuse for anybody in Britain falling for Obama. Yet today, in this country, even some of those who remained sane during the emotional spasm of the Diana aberration are pumping the air for Princess Barack. At a time of gross economic and geopolitical instability throughout the Western world, this is beyond irresponsibility.
To anyone who kept his head, the string of Christmas cracker mottoes booming through the public address system on Washington's National Mall can only excite scepticism. It is crucial to recall the reality that lies behind the rhetoric. Denouncing "those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents" comes ill from a man whose flagship legislation, the Freedom of Choice Act, will impose abortion, including partial-birth abortion, on every state in the Union. It seems the era of Hope is to be inaugurated with a slaughter of the innocents.
Obama's American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan is like one of those toxic packages traded by bankers: it camouflages many unaffordable gifts to his client state. With a federal deficit already at $1.2 trillion, Obama wants to squander $825 billion (which will undoubtedly mushroom to more than $1 trillion) on creating 600,000 more government jobs and a further 459,000 in "green energy" (useless wind turbines and other Heath-Robinson contraptions favoured by Beltway environmentalists).
It is frightening to think there is a real possibility that the entire world economy could go into complete meltdown and famine kill millions. Yet Western - and British - commentators are cocooned in a warm comfort zone of infatuation with America's answer to Neil Kinnock. We should be long past applauding politicians of any hue: they got us into this mess. The best deserve a probationary opportunity to prove themselves, the worst should be in jail.
It is questionable whether the present political system can survive the coming crisis. Whatever the solution, teenage swooning sentimentality over a celebrity cult has no part in it. The most powerful nation on earth is confronting its worst economic crisis under the leadership of its most extremely liberal politician, who has virtually no experience of federal politics. That is not an opportunity but a catastrophe.
These are frank, even ungracious, words: they have the one merit that, unlike almost everything else written today about Obama, they will not require to be eaten in the future.

Goat detained over armed robbery
Fri Jan 23, 12:08 pm ET
LAGOS (Reuters) – Police in Nigeria are holding a goat on suspicion of attempted armed robbery.
Vigilantes took the black and white beast to the police saying it was an armed robber who had used black magic to transform himself into a goat to escape arrest after trying to steal a Mazda 323.
"The group of vigilante men came to report that while they were on patrol they saw some hoodlums attempting to rob a car. They pursued them. However one of them escaped while the other turned into a goat," Kwara state police spokesman Tunde Mohammed told Reuters by telephone.
"We cannot confirm the story, but the goat is in our custody. We cannot base our information on something mystical. It is something that has to be proved scientifically, that a human being turned into a goat," he said.
Belief in witchcraft is widespread in parts of Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation. Residents came to the police station to see the goat, photographed in one national newspaper on its knees next to a pile of straw.

Ayers Turned Away From Canada By Immigration Officials
William Ayers, the 1960s radical whose ties to President-elect Barack Obama caused trouble for his campaign, was turned away from Canada Sunday night as he tried to enter the country for a series of educational events.
Jeffrey Kugler, the executive director for the Center for Urban Schooling at the University of Toronto, said Ayers was deemed not admissible after being pulled aside by Canadian immigration officials while trying to clear customs at the Toronto airport.
Ayers had been invited to speak before the center. He was also scheduled to meet with the Toronto District School Board and do interviews with Canadian television and radio stations, Kugler said.
Kugler said the center sent e-mails notifying guests who planned to attend Ayers' talk that he had been turned back. Kugler said the center will try to reschedule Ayers.
Ayers, a co-founder of the violent Weather Underground group and current education professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, told the Toronto Star that he didn't know why he had been turned away.
According to Kugler, Ayers was told he could request a hearing but that would mean some sort of detention and a possible two week wait. Ayers opted to return to Chicago.

A Dozen Fun Facts About the House Democrats' Massive Spending Bill
1. The House Democrats' bill will cost each and every household $6,700 additional debt, paid for by our children and grandchildren.
2. The total cost of this one piece of legislation is almost as much as the annual discretionary budget for the entire federal government.
3. President-elect Obama has said that his proposed stimulus legislation will create or save three million jobs. This means that this legislation will spend about $275,000 per job. The average household income in the U.S. is $50,000 a year.
4. The House Democrats' bill provides enough spending - $825 billion - to give every man, woman, and child in America $2,700.
5. $825 billion is enough to give every person living in poverty in the U.S. $22,000.
6. $825 billion is enough to give every person in Ohio $72,000.
7. Although the House Democrats' proposal has been billed as a transportation and infrastructure investment package, in actuality only $30 billion of the bill - or three percent - is for road and highway spending. A recent study from the Congressional Budget Office said that only 25 percent of infrastructure dollars can be spent in the first year, making the one year total less than $7 billion for infrastructure.
8. Much of the funding within the House Democrats' proposal will go to programs that already have large, unexpended balances. For example, the bill provides $1 billion for Community Development Block Grants (CDBG), which already have $16 billion on hand. And, this year, Congress has plans to rescind $9 billion in highway funding that the states have not yet used.
9. In 1993, the unemployment rate was virtually the same as the rate today (around seven percent). Yet, then-President Clinton's proposed stimulus legislation ONLY contained $16 billion in spending.
10. Here are just a few of the programs and projects that have been included in the House Democrats' proposal:
· $650 million for digital TV coupons.
· $6 billion for colleges/universities - many which have billion dollar endowments.
· $166 billion in direct aid to states - many of which have failed to budget wisely.
· $50 million in funding for the National Endowment of the Arts.
· $44 million for repairs to U.S. Department of Agriculture headquarters.
· $200 million for the National Mall, including grass planting.
· $400 million for "National Treasures."
11. Almost one-third of the so called tax relief in the House Democrats' bill is spending in disguise, meaning that true tax relief makes up only 24 percent of the total package - not the 40 percent that President-elect Obama had requested.
12. $825 billion is just the beginning - many Capitol Hill Democrats want to spend even more taxpayer dollars on their "stimulus" plan.

Bush commutes sentences of former US border agents
Jan 19 01:09 PM US/Eastern
By DEB RIECHMANN Associated (with Terrorists) Press Writer
WASHINGTON (AP) - In his final acts of clemency, President George W. Bush on Monday commuted the prison sentences of two former U.S. Border Patrol agents whose convictions for shooting a Mexican drug dealer ignited fierce debate about illegal immigration.
Bush's decision to commute the sentences of Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, who tried to cover up the shooting, was welcomed by both Republican and Democratic members of Congress. They had long argued that the agents were merely doing their jobs, defending the American border against criminals. They also maintained that the more than 10-year prison sentences the pair was given were too harsh.
Rancor over their convictions, sentencing and firings has simmered ever since the shooting occurred in 2005.
Ramos and Compean became a rallying point among conservatives and on talk shows where their supporters called them heroes. Nearly the entire bipartisan congressional delegation from Texas and other lawmakers from both sides of the political aisle pleaded with Bush to grant them clemency.
Bush didn't pardon the men for their crimes, but decided instead to commute their prison sentences because he believed they were excessive and that they had already suffered the loss of their jobs, freedom and reputations, a senior administration official said.
The action by the president, who believes the border agents received fair trials and that the verdicts were just, does not diminish the seriousness of their crimes, the official said.
Compean and Ramos, who have served about two years of their sentences, are expected to be released from prison within the next two months.
They were convicted of shooting admitted drug smuggler Osvaldo Aldrete Davila in the buttocks as he fled across the Rio Grande, away from an abandoned van load of marijuana. The border agents argued during their trials that they believed the smuggler was armed and that they shot him in self defense. The prosecutor in the case said there was no evidence linking the smuggler to the van of marijuana. The prosecutor also said the border agents didn't report the shooting and tampered with evidence by picking up several spent shell casings.
The agents were fired after their convictions on several charges, including assault with a dangerous weapon and with serious bodily injury, violation of civil rights and obstruction of justice. All their convictions, except obstruction of justice, were upheld on appeal.

Torture, you say?
A great comment by DrewM. over at AOS HQ about the "admission" that some potential Saudi 9/11 hijacker was "tortured".
How was he tortured, you ask?
He (the Saudi) was: held in solitary confinement, deprived of sleep, forced to stand naked in front of a female interrogator, subjected to strip-searches, forced to wear a bra and panties (on his head), his mother and sister were called "whores" and he was lead around on a dog leash.
I'm quite sure that John McCain (and his fellow POW's) would much rather have been forced to wear a bra and panties, rather than being tied up in ropes and hung by their elbows for 12 hours at a time.
I agree.

You want torture? I'll give you f*cking torture. How about this...you are at work and suddenly there is a tremendous crash and fire. After huddling with your co-workers you realize you are 80 stories up and cut off from rescue by an out of control fire below you. The heat is becoming so intense that you can't stand it much longer. So you you try and call your loved ones and if you're lucky, you get through. Maybe you get to say goodbye to them directly or you leave a voice mail that will haunt them forever. Then you break a window, hang hundreds of feet above the ground and let go.
That's torture.
I agree.

One of the commandos tossed a pebble against the hut’s tin door — a traditional way visitors announce their arrival in rural Afghanistan.
The rattle of the stone against the door failed to rouse the guards. “They were both zipped up inside their sleeping bags, sleeping,” one behind the hostage on the floor of the darkened hut and the other outside, the engineer said. But their prisoner was awake and suddenly alert.
“I heard the latch rattling and somebody came in,” he said. “The first guy came in with a LED light, and I just presumed that somebody was coming to visit. I didn’t think of it anymore until the second guy came in and I saw the silhouette of the first fellow. Then I knew it was U.S. mil that was coming in. I don’t know how many guys actually came into the room, but it was soon filled up, and it was soon obvious that I was being rescued.
“I don’t know what I said in English, but whatever I said I said it rather loudly evidently, because they said ‘Quiet!’ ”
The hostage’s aim was to quickly let the operators know who he was, but he understood their unease at the level of volume. “Sound carries so far, and they’d worked so hard to come down quietly across the mountain, and here I am shouting,” he said.
Nevertheless, “They knew who was who,” the engineer said. the SEALs quickly demonstrated that, aiming their silencer-equipped weapons to shoot and kill the kidnapper in the room before he could fire a round. The engineer said he heard the sounds of the operators shooting and killing a guard posted outside.
The SEALs turned to the now former hostage and told him they were there to take him back.
“I was in favor of that, 100 percent,” he said. “I was very surprised, very amazed and very happy.”

Don't run from the po-lice in Madera Co. Calif.
Notice how he knocks dude off his feet when he clocks him.
I wish there was sound.
If you don't have any respect for the cop, you'd better have some for the knuckles...

I missed out on a phenomenal opportunity to see his presentation at a church near my house, last fall. I didn't find out until the next day, that he was there. I was totally bummed I didn't get the chance to hear this wonderful man speak.

Texas death row inmate pulls out eye, eats it
HOUSTON -- A Texas death row inmate with a history of mental problems pulled out his only good eye and told authorities he ate it.
Andre Thomas, 25, was arrested for the fatal stabbings of his estranged wife, their young son and her 13-month-old daughter in March 2004. Their hearts also had been ripped out. He was convicted and condemned for the infant's death.
While in the Grayson County Jail in Sherman, Thomas plucked out his right eye before his trial later in 2004. A judge subsequently ruled he was competent to stand trial.
A death-row officer at the Polunsky Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice found Thomas in his cell with blood on his face and took him to the infirmary.
""Thomas said he pulled out his eye and subsequently ingested it," agency spokesman Jason Clark said Friday.
Thomas was treated at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler after the Dec. 9 incident. Then he was transferred and remains at the Jester Unit, a prison psychiatric facility near Richmond southwest of Houston.
"He will finally be able to receive the mental health care that we had wanted and begged for from day 1," Bobbie Peterson-Cate, Thomas' trial attorney, told the Sherman Herald Democrat. "He is insane and mentally ill. It is exactly the same reason he pulled out the last one."
At his trial, defense lawyers also argued he suffered from alcohol and drug abuse.
Thomas does not have an execution date.
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in October upheld his conviction and death sentence for the death of 13-month-old Leyha Marie Hughes. Also killed March 27, 2004, were his wife, Laura Christine Boren, 20, and their son, 4-year-old Andre Lee.
Thomas, from Texoma, walked into the Sherman Police Department and told a dispatcher he had just murdered the three and had stabbed himself in the chest.
Thomas told police how he put his victims' hearts in his pocket and left their apartment, took them home, put them in a plastic bag and threw them in the trash.
Court documents described the three victims as having "large, gaping wounds to their chests."

DRT...
I'm sure he was just "getting his life back together"...
I wonder if people realize that if more citizens did what Mr. Billy Jackson did to these two oxygen thieves, there'd be a heckuva lot less crime.

Mr. Jackson is a sheepdog and did the right thing. He killed what needed killin'.

Sorry, but your nephew was a turd and I doubt there was really no way that you didn't know that.

I wonder if people realize that if more citizens did what Mr. Billy Jackson did to these two oxygen thieves, there'd be a heckuva lot less crime.

Mr. Jackson is a sheepdog and did the right thing. He killed what needed killin'.
Mr. Jackson, a prior Navy veteran and concealed carrier had his handgun along for the ride. When working on his properties, he usually unholstered his weapon and placed it on the mantle. This afternoon, he had it in his waist band. When he heard a loud knock at the door, he went to answer it.Great job Mr. Jackson!
Suddenly, two masked me forced their way inside the dwelling. One stuck a stolen Tec-9 pistol in Jackson's face, shouting "Give us your wallet! You're gonna die!"
"When I looked him in the eye, I knew I was going to die...... I figured I was going to die and they were going to die, too," said Jackson. Mr, Jackson bent over clutching his chest in an apparent heart attack. The armed intruder cold cocked Mr. Jackson on the head, but Jackson came up shooting. He shot the first armed assailant in the side, then fired a quick round into the second criminal. Then he gave the masked man with the Tec-9 another round as the second thug staggered against the wall. As the first man fell, Jackson placed another round into the thug against the wall. The criminal with the Tec-9 managed to get out the door, and Mr. Jackson fired another seven rounds of .40 S&W after him.
With his wife in hysterics, Mr. Jackson called 911 and requested police. Believing the threat was removed, he placed his empty pistol on the mantelpiece. The criminal who brandished the Tec-9 managed to get to the back yard, where he died. His partner in crime died against the wall where he fell. Earl Springer and Dazmond Turner, both 19 years old, were dead. They were dead not because they were disadvantaged youths, but because they made the choice to commit a crime. That, and they chose the wrong victim.
The priceless quote:
Dazmond Turner's family quickly came to his defense, stating that it was shocking, unbelievable, that he would do such a thing. "It's just something that he wouldn't do and it's been eating at me all night long. It's like, no, that's not Daz," said Stephanie Roach, Turner's great aunt. "I don't know if he was forced into doing it, but that is not my nephew." She went on to reveal that Turner used to be a basketball player for Valley High School. He was struggling towards obtaining his GED and was supposedly preparing to support his baby due to be born soon. Turner's family in Kentucky thought he had traveled to Florida to see his mother and sister. "Now they on their way to bury him," Ms. Roach said.Cry me a friggin' river!
Sorry, but your nephew was a turd and I doubt there was really no way that you didn't know that.

Taking Chance...
Via BlackFive:
HBO will be airing "Taking Chance" on Feb 21. It's a "must-see".
It's the story of Marine LtCol. Michael Strobl and his journey to return LCpl. Chance Phelps home to his family. BlackFive wrote about it back in 2004, here. It moved me to tears (not hard to do).
If you've never read the story, you should. It shows the honor and loyalty that most military people have for one another.
I watched this trailer and bawled, so there's no telling what it'll do to me when I watch the whole thing.
We all owe it to Chance Phelps and Michael Strobl, to watch it next month.
This comment at BlackFive's latest struck me hard...

The toughest read I have ever had and a trailer that matched. I am still crying. One of my sons is a Marine. I am so, so proud of him. And ashamed that I was not.

The NYPD and an old Marine...

Ofc. Susan Porcello makes me proud. She brought happiness to the last days of an old Marine.
Thank you, Ofc. Porcello.
RIP Marine. Semper Fidelis.
Last days for Marine were true Finest hours
Tuesday, December 9th 2008, 6:49 PM
Sometimes when old Marines die they do fade away into unmarked graves in Potter's Field.
Such might have been the case for Gaspar Musso, USMC 925050, who fought in the Battle of Tinian in the Marianas Islands in 1944 and who died Nov. 15 at age 84 in a Brooklyn nursing home.
Enter Police Officer Susan Porcello, a PBA delegate at the 68th Precinct in Bay Ridge and one of those big-hearted New Yorkers who still make this the best city on Earth.
"No way was I going to let this brave old Marine who fought for his country in WWII get buried in Potter's Field," she says.
Porcello first met Musso back in July when she responded to a 911 ambulance call to the retired insurance broker's one-bedroom apartment on, appropriately, Marine Ave.
"When my partner, Eddie Ennis, and I arrived at his apartment Gaspar seemed a little bit down about himself," Porcello says. "He said he felt alone in the world. We talked to him a bit and as I looked around his tidy apartment I noticed that he had served in the military - the Marines to be exact."
Porcello asked him about family and friends. "Look around you, what do you see?" Musso said. "I have no family or friends."
To which Porcello said, "Well, I'm your friend."
Right there, with those four beautiful words, Gaspar Musso was destined to die with the dignity he'd earned with a rifle in his hands, fighting in a USMC uniform, in a war that saved civilization.
If she didn't already wear a badge, you'd want to pin a star on Susan Porcello.
Musso, a diabetic with a host of other age-related maladies, had accidentally overdosed on his prescription medications. Porcello accompanied him to Lutheran Medical Center.
"I told him I'd be back to visit him and take him to a senior center where he could make some friends," said Porcello, who comes from a big Italian family with a mom, dad, three sisters and a brother.
"I told him I was making him my 'Grandpa,' and if he liked, he could spend Thanksgiving with my family. Eddie and I discussed alternating holidays with Gaspar so he wouldn't be alone for any of them."
Two days later Musso was placed in critical care. Porcello asked hospital staff where he'd be buried if he didn't make it. "Potter's Field," said one administrator.
"This infuriated me," said Porcello. "There was no way I was going to let a man who fought for our country be buried in Potter's Field. Not on my watch!"
Porcello told the hospital to keep her apprised of Musso's condition. She had a local priest visit him. Porcello even asked NYPD's Missing Person's Squad to search for next of kin.
No luck.
Musso had been an only child to Anthony and Marie Musso, both deceased. He had no other relatives. Musso's only friend, an upstairs neighbor, had died the year before.
After his health improved, Musso asked Porcello to become his official health proxy.
She transferred him to Caton Park Nursing Home, where he was treated extremely well. She visited him often, learning that Musso was born May 7, 1924, joined the USMC in December 1943, finished training at Camp Lejune in March 1944 and was fighting with the 2nd Marines on Tinian Island by July 1944.
"I visited Gaspar on Nov. 13, bringing him rosary beads, a Bible, and his reading glasses," she said.
"The next day, Nov. 14, I returned and found Gaspar sitting up in a chair, dressed in his own clothes. Looking great."
Porcello washed his hands and face, trimmed his nails and eyebrows and asked if he was coming to her house for Thanksgiving. "I'm trying!" he said. He also asked Porcello to bring him a Christmas wreath for his room.
The next morning Porcello received a phone call saying that Gaspar Musso had died peacefully in his sleep.
No way was she going to let her good friend be toe-tagged and buried in Potter's Field.
Porcello paid out of her own pocket for a wake at McLaughlin's on Third Ave. and a mass at St. Patrick's Church in Bay Ridge, where a crowd of good-hearted cops from the 68th Precinct filled the pews, six serving as pallbearers. Sgt. Angel Rosa of the 68th, also a Marine, arranged for a USMC honor guard at Musso's funeral.
Then taps blew over Gaspar Musso, United States Marine, as he was buried next to his mother at Resurrection Cemetery in Staten Island.
With the dignity he deserved.

Glenn Greenwald is a buffoon...
I can't believe what an intellectually dishonest person Glenn Greenwald is.
This really has to be read to be believed. The lack of rational thought on the Left is truly stunning.
This is just the beginning quote and doesn't really show what a moron he (and those of his ilk) is. Read the whole thing.

HH: Let’s come back to that, but pause for a moment on Hamas. Do you think Hamas is a threat to the United States?
GG: No, I don’t think Hamas is remotely a threat to the United States. I think Saddam Hussein was more of a threat to the United States, and I don’t think he was a threat to the United States.
HH: Do you think Hamas is an extension of Iran?
GG: No, I don’t think Hamas is an extension of Iran.
HH: And do you believe Hamas is a terrorist organization?
GG: I mean, every person has their own definition of terrorism. The definition I use would include probably a lot more things than you would include, but I would include things like sending people to blow themselves up in pizza parlors and buses inside Israel to be acts of terrorism, sure.
HH: And does Israel have a right to exist unqualifiedly?
GG: Absolutely.

Richardson withdraws bid to be commerce secretary
By NEDRA PICKLER Associated (with Terrorists) Press Writer
WASHINGTON (A w/T P) - New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson on Sunday announced that he was withdrawing his nomination to be President-elect Barack Obama's commerce secretary amid a grand jury investigation into how some of his political donors won a lucrative state contract.
Richardson's withdrawal was the first disruption of Obama's Cabinet process and the second "pay-to-play" investigation that has touched Obama's transition to the presidency. The president-elect has remained above the fray in both the case of arrested Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and the New Mexico case.
A federal grand jury is investigating how a California company that contributed to Richardson's political activities won a New Mexico transportation contract worth more than $1 million. Richardson said in a statement issued by the Obama transition office that the investigation could take weeks or months but expressed confidence it will show he and his administration acted properly.
"I have concluded that the ongoing investigation also would have forced an untenable delay in the confirmation process," Richardson said. "Given the gravity of the economic situation the nation is facing, I could not in good conscience ask the president-elect and his administration to delay for one day the important work that needs to be done."
Richardson said he will remain as governor and told Obama, "I am eager to serve in the future in any way he deems useful."
The announcement came ahead of Obama's Monday meetings with congressional leaders on a massive economic recovery bill he wants lawmakers to pass quickly.
Obama said he has accepted Richardson's withdrawal, first reported by NBC News, "with deep regret."

Cops: Dad ordered to pay child support kills son
By Janet Mcconnaughey, Associated (with Terrorists) Press Writer – Sat Jan 3, 8:23 pm ET
NEW ORLEANS – A man who initially told police gunmen kidnapped his 2 1/2-year-old son was arrested Saturday, accused of committing an "extremely hideous" murder because he was ordered to pay child support, Police Superintendent Warren Riley said.
Danny Platt confessed, told police where to find the child's body and will be booked on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of Ja' Shawn Powell, Riley said at a news conference.
"He had said he would kill either his wife or his child before he paid child support," which he recently had been ordered to do, Riley said.
Riley said he did not know the amount of child support and would not describe how the boy was killed, saying the coroner would do that after the autopsy was complete. The coroner's spokesman did not immediately return a call.
"The mother is in a safe place," Riley said.
Although he had visiting rights, Platt, 22, of New Orleans, had never visited the boy until he picked him up Friday, Riley said.
Police put out a notice Saturday asking people to look for the boy and saying his father had told them three men with dreadlocks and AK-47 rifles had piled out of an SUV and kidnapped Ja' Shawn shortly before midnight Friday.
"His story never really added up," Riley said. "He was a suspect from the very beginning."
Riley said Platt eventually confessed and told officers where to find the body.
Police spokesman officer Janssen Valencia said he did not know if Platt has an attorney.
Platt had only a couple of "very minor" previous arrests, Riley said.
"How does an individual — because he's ordered to pay child support to take care of a kid ... believe that this is so much pressure that he would face — he would do this hideous act to his own child, or to any child, and think that is a remedy to paying child support?" Riley said. "I mean there are some sick individuals in this society, and this gentleman is clearly one."
